Urban Travel Demand Modeling: From Individual Choices to General Equilibrium

A state-of-the-art approach to urban travel demand modeling Currently used travel forecasting methodology was developed almost three decades ago, primarily to assess the impacts of large-scale capital improvement projects, and was not designed to deal with contemporary urban transportation problems. To be effective today, travel demand models must explicitly represent traveler behavior, must be policy-sensitive, and must be operationally reliable. Urban Travel Demand Modeling: From Individual Choices to General Equilibrium presents an integrated system of models which overhaul the four traditional phases of travel generation, modal split, trip distribution, and network assignment. This book shows, for the first time, how generalized network equilibrium may be rigorously forecast from the optimal travel choices of "trip consumers" without the need to resort to heuristic procedures such as feedbacks. In addition, models for optimal transportation supply decisions are integrated with the demand models. Transit travel and goods movements are specifically addressed. To make this book as self-contained as possible, the author provides review material on the mathematics required and the basic concepts of discrete choice modeling. Numerical examples throughout the book demonstrate the calibration and use of the models in a variety of situations, including uncongested and congested networks. Review problems are systematically provided, many with solutions. Illustrative add-on software for model implementation on several popular platforms is also available separately. Urban Travel Demand Modeling may be used at the senior and graduate levels in civil engineering, economics, operations research, urban and regional planning, and geography courses. Transportation professionals in the private and public sectors, academics and researchers, will also find this methodology a rich, versatile, and efficient tool with which to address major urban transportation issues, including demand management, road and parking pricing, environmental impacts, changing socioeconomic and activity patterns, and urban development.

Low Carbon Transport in Asia: Strategies for Optimizing Co-benefits

Without the effective participation of developing Asia, a climate crisis is certain. Within developing Asia, the key to averting such a crisis lies in low carbon transport. China, India and Asia's other emerging economies could promote fuel efficient vehicles, public transport, and sustainable urban planning. Or they could become locked into inefficient vehicles, energy intensive infrastructure, and suburban sprawl. The path they choose will have long-term implications for the entire world. And it will depend upon the extent to which they adopt a co-benefit approach. A co-benefit approach involves recognizing that some transport policies mitigate greenhouse gases while simultaneously improving urban air quality, commuting times and energy security. Accounting for these additional benefits can overcome a reluctance to bear the costs of climate actions. But it also presents unique technical, financial, and institutional challenges to decision-makers unaccustomed to optimizing multiple benefits. The book represents a pioneering effort to identify and remove barriers to a co-benefit approach in developing Asia's transport sector. The introductory section makes the case for co-benefits in developing Asia's transport sector. The second section features analytical frameworks to identify strategies with potential co-benefits, offering new findings on black carbon and dieselization. The third section grounds the analytic work in case studies on fuel switching in Pakistan, urban planning in Bandung, Indonesia, congestion charges in Beijing, vehicle restraints in Hanoi and bus rapid transit in Jakarta. A final section examines whether a post-2012 climate regime can help transform a rapidly motorizing Asia into a low carbon Asia. This book is essential reading for transport policy makers, planners, and researchers concerned with low carbon transport, climate change and development in Asia and the wider world.

Future Transport in Cities

Cities around the world are being wrecked by the ever-increasing burden of traffic. A significant part of the problem is the enduring popularity of the private car - still an attractive and convenient option to many, who turn a blind eye to the environmental and public health impact. Public transport has always seemed to take second place to the car, and yet alternative ways of moving around cities are possible. Measures to improve public transport, as well as initiatives to encourage walking and cycling, have been introduced in many large cities to decrease car use, or at least persuade people to use their cars in different ways. This book explores many of the measures being tried. It takes the best examples from around the world, and illustrates the work of those architects and urban planners who have produced some of the most significant models of "transport architecture" and city planning. The book examines the ways in which new systems are evolving, and how these are being integrated into the urban environment. It suggests a future where it could be mandatory to provide systems of horizontal movement within large-scale development, using the analogy of the lift, upon which every high-rise building depends. In so doing, future cities could evolve without dependence on the private car.

Transportation Labor Issues and Regulatory Reform

Regulatory reform in the late 1970s and early 1980s vastly transformed the labor market for transportation workers. Most research in this area focuses on the effect of deregulation on the earnings of nonmanagement company workers in airline, trucking and rail. Deregulation of transportation industries, though, has had a broader effect on workers. For instance, deregulation also influences workers hours worked per week, working conditions, worker safety, and a host of other labor issues. Deregulation might also influence the earnings of managers and self-employed workers in transportation industries. Examining these issues is valuable because such analysis provides a more complete assessment of labor market changes following the shift to a more market oriented business environment. "Transportation Labor Issues and Regulatory Reform" adds to the debate on deregulation s influence on transportation labor markets by presenting empirical evidence on an array of labor market outcomes in transportation industries. Contributions to this volume are categorized by their analysis on worker safety, working conditions and employment opportunities, and by their analysis on managerial and self-employed earnings *Author: Peoples/ Peoples, James/ Talley, Wayne K. *Binding Type: Hardcover *Number of Pages: 234 *Publication Date: 2004/11/22 *Language: English *Dimensions: 9.12 x 6.56 x 0.89 inches

American Transportation Policy

The author maintains that American politics, institutional arrangements, and political culture have prevented the development of a comprehensive, integrated, intermodal transportation policy in the United States. Dilger makes his argument by examining the development of the national governmental authority in both surface and air transportation. Each transportation mode highways/mass transit, Amtrak, and civilian air transportation is examined separately, assessing their development over time and focusing on current controversies, including, but not limited to, the highway versus mass transit funding issue; the recent decentralization of decision making authority on surface transportation policy; Amtrak's viability as an alternative to the automobile; and current antiterrorist policies' effect on transportation policy.

Economic Impacts of Intelligent Transportation Systems: Innovations and Case Studies

There are unique complexities associated with the economic valuation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and telematics. Traditional methods of quantitative analysis may not be appropriate in accurately and reliably assessing the economic impacts of these technologies. Although advanced transportation and related technologies are being planned and deployed at an increasingly rapid pace, many of the technologies are still relatively new, and their use may not be widespread. Much of the initial information and statistics gathered have been anecdotal and have focused more on benefits rather than costs. Therefore, difficulties arise due to the lack of historical data and 'lessons learned' from which to draw upon. In addition, compared with traditional transportation infrastructure, ITS technologies have different life cycles, cost structures, and a number of interrelated elements. This book addresses these concerns and proposes new economic assessment techniques as well as modifications to existing ones. Included are case studies from a multitude of North American, European, and Asian nations and major metropolitan areas covering a wide range of ITS technologies including freeway management, electronic toll collection, advanced driver assistance systems, and traveller information systems.
