Locomotives of Australia, 1854 to 2007
This book examines the steam, diesel, and electric locomotives that have powered Australia since 1854. This fourth edition details the massive technological changes that have swept onto the Australian locomotive scene. From the late 1870s, US built locomotives had been imported for Australian use, including the classic USA 4-4-0, 4-6-0, and 4-8-0 Baldwin-built locomotives. Also of interest is the Western Australian Pilbara"s newest heavy iron ore haulers giant locomotives weighing 197 tons and exerting a massive 4300 hp. Five Australian built EMD SD50S now work on the Utah Railroad and five Australian-manufactured GE C36-7 locomotives also went to the US. This edition contains references and/or direct entries to no fewer than 39 new locomotive types, including the latest diesels, with considerable fresh research and new photographs. The book also contains an up-to-date map of Australia"s rail system and includes photographs provided by some of the nation"s more dedicated photographer
